A Skyline of Dreams: The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
Standing proudly at the entrance of the Grand Canal, the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute is one of the most photographed and beloved landmarks in the world. Its magnificent white domes dominate the Venetian skyline, serving as a monumental tribute to the end of the plague in the 17th century.
For guests dining at Ristorante Il Giglio, this architectural masterpiece is more than just a view; it is part of the neighborhood’s soul. Located just across the water from our terrace, the Salute’s presence adds a layer of spiritual and artistic grandeur to every meal. Whether you admire it under the bright midday sun or see it illuminated against the velvet night sky, the Basilica is a constant reminder of the resilience and beauty of Venice.
The Gondola: The Soul of the Canals
There is no symbol of Venice more enduring than the Gondola. To glide through the narrow canals in a traditional hand-crafted boat is to experience the city as it was meant to be seen: from the water.
One of the most authentic spots to begin this journey is the Traghetto di Santa Maria del Giglio, located just a few steps from our restaurant. This specific point is famous for its "Traghetto" service, where gondoliers ferry locals and visitors across the Grand Canal to the Salute district for just a few euros—a centuries-old tradition that remains unchanged.
After a private gondola tour through the hidden rii (small canals) or a quick crossing to visit the Basilica, the natural destination for a weary traveler is a welcoming table at Ristorante Il Giglio.
History Meeting History: Since 1719
It is fascinating to think that when the Basilica della Salute was still relatively new to the city’s landscape, Ristorante Il Giglio was already opening its doors to hungry Venetians and international travelers in 1719.
Our restaurant has shared the same campo with generations of gondoliers. Even today, the rhythmic sound of the oars and the distant calls of the gondoliers provide the perfect soundtrack to a lunch or dinner on our terrace.
The Perfect Venetian Afternoon
To truly live like a Venetian, we suggest this curated itinerary:
The Crossing: Take the gondola ferry from the Giglio pier across the Grand Canal.
The Visit: Explore the breathtaking interiors and the sacristy of the Basilica della Salute.
The Return: Wander back toward the Accademia Bridge, taking in the art galleries along the way.
The Reward: Finish your journey at Ristorante Il Giglio. Pair the view of the nearby canals with our authentic Sarde in Saor or a fresh Seafood Risotto, celebrating the flavors of the very water you just traveled.
